[PARIS] Hi guys, I’m Paris, I’m an ambassador here at Science Space, and today we’re doing an experiment that you may or may not be familiar with, volcanoes. So we’re using bicarbonate soda and white vinegar. So what’s gonna happen here is as these two combine they’re going to create a chemical reaction, and that is going to create carbon dioxide, which is gonna make this go boom! So, first things first, put the funnel into your cup that you’re using, putting a little bit of bicarb soda into the bottle. A bit more?
[OFF CAMERA] Yeah, I reckon. Go for it.
[PARIS] That should be enough. If you want it to be a little bit more exciting we can add a little bit of food colouring. Now you can do this just by pouring it in or you can use an eyedropper. I’m gonna use an eyedropper today just to make less mess. And then, the last step is putting the vinegar in. Here we go.
[OFF CAMERA] Woo!
[PARIS] So what’s happened there is we might not have put enough bicarb or we might not have put enough vinegar, that’s the great thing about science, you can experiment with different amounts of things to see what might happen. So now we might try it with this volcano that we’ve got made up already. So this time I think I’m gonna put a little bit more bicarb soda in, just to see what happens. And when I say a little bit, I mean a lot more. Cool. Then another bit of food colouring. And here we go again!
[OFF CAMERA] Woo!
[PARIS] There you go, that’s your volcano. So this is something you can try at home, but just make sure that you’ve got stuff to ensure that you don’t make too much of a mess so that your parents don’t have to clean up. Thank you!
Virtual Science Space is our offering to the community during these challenging times. We are aiming to help all aspiring scientists, engineers and STEM lovers alike to continue their STEM learning at home.
Using our amazing STEM Team made up of real-life scientists, science students and aspiring educators to we have videoed awesome experiments, fantastic demos (that come directly out of our LIVE science shows) and put together some maker challenges for you and your children to do together at home.
As the COVD-19 situation is evolving at a rapid speed, we have done our best to quickly create these materials. As such, we have not edited ANY of these videos, and we ask that you please be understanding. All videos will have closed captioning available via our YouTube channel.
